VCDEasy's Interactivity page usage example Guide by Adam

An extract from the Adam's "DVD to (S)VCD with Menu's and Chapters" guide, just to demonstrate a use of the VCDEasy's Interactivity page. You can author very simple VideoCDs with VCDEasy, but you will see in this extract that you can also author complex VideoCDs with VCDEasy... but it is not that "easy"!

Only Follow This Step if your Main Menu has an Intro!
a) Select your main menu as the sequence.
b) Input the frame number for the first frame that comes after your intro. Remember that this is the same number that we used when adding the numbers in VirtualDub and the same frame number that we used in TMPGenc when adding the I-Frame. This is also the same number that you were supposed to write down. If you need to refresh your memory click here and here.
c) Click OK and VCDEasy will convert this frame number into a chapter entrypoint time in the box to your right.
Hint: Make sure you realize what we are doing here. We want out main menu to loop but we do not want to have to wait through the intro every time. So we have inserted a chapter point immediately following the intro. When the menu reaches the end it will jump back to this frame rather than the first frame in the sequence. Also remember that when we encoded our main menu sequence to mpg, we inserted an I-Frame at this specific frame so that we can create a chapter exactly at this point. If we had not included this I-Frame during encoding than the chapter could be as much as 1 second off.

Take a moment to acquaint yourself with VCDEasy's interactive features.
a) This is where you select the item you want to edit. The items in the red bracket are my movie. It is a single mpg track but there is an item for each chapter.
b) Here, you can set the amount of times the item will play before it times out.
For still menu's or play items (movie, trailers, Music videos, etc..) always set this to Play once.
For moving menu's always set this to Play forever.
The [...] button is a shortcut. After setting the current selection you can click this button and then apply that selection to any or all of your other items. This shortcut button is available for most of the features in VCDEasy.
c) This is where you select the destination to jump to after the item has “timed out. You must also specify how long it will wait before jumping to the designated item.
For still menu's always set this to Wait infinite.
For anything else use Wait and set it to 0 seconds. Most items should be set to “timeout” to your Main Menu.
d) This is where you setup how you will navigate through your menu's. The Previous and Next options refer to the previous and next track buttons on your DVD remote. Return represents stop on your remote, and Default represents Enter on your remote.
Unless you have a particular reason, leave the reactivity setting to Immediate.
e) This is where you set your number keys. In order to edit this manually, you must first click Overwrite this default assignment. When you click on the section under Play there will be a drop down box where you select the item to jump to.
For each number select the sequence you want to jump to. In this picture, if you hit the number 1 on your remote you will jump to sequence 01, which is the first chapter of my movie. You can designate any number from 1 to 99.

a) VCDEasy will automatically make all of your Next and Previous links for you, in the order that your items were loaded. For most of your items this will be fine, but you must go through and manually change some of these links. Recall that you can see all of your items, and their order, by clicking on the Play Item option. Here, if I am on Chapter 12 of my movie and I hit next, it will take me to my language selection menu, when I would rather it take me back to Chapter 1 of my movie. So I set the Next link on Chapter 12, to take me to Chapter 1, and I set the Previous link on Chapter 1 to take me to Chapter 12. Now I have created a loop so that I can maneuver through each of my chapters in order either by going backwards or forwards. I would do the same thing with my Language Selection Menu and my Chapter Selection menu. Manually change any relevant Next and Previous links so that everything links as it should.
b) Exactly how you set the Return key will depend on your menu structure, but generally you will want Return to either take you back to the previous menu or to the Main Menu, EXCEPT you want at least one menu where the Return link takes you to VideoCD End, otherwise there will be no way to turn off your (S)VCD. Usually you will want to set your Main Menu's Return link to VideoCD End.

Think of your (S)VCD as a slideshow. Start from the beginning and work your way down through each of the items, setting the interactive options so that you can logically navigate through all of your menu's. In this example, the black lines represent where the Next and Previous buttons would take you, the red lines represent the Enter button, and the #'s represent the number keys on your remote.
Each of the Play Items represents a different chapter, though it still just one mpg track.

Setting up the chapter selection menu: the easy way.
a) In the Play Item drop down menu, select any one of your chapters for your movie.
b) Check Overwrite this default assignment
c) Click the [...] immediately to your right. Remember, this lets us apply the current setting to any or all of our other items.
d) Highlight all of your Chapter Selection Menu's and hit Ok.
Hint: Make sure you realize what we are doing. By default, each of your chapters for your movie will have # keys already set. So if you are watching chapter 2 of your movie and you hit the #4 key on your remote, then you will jump to chapter 4. All we did was transfer these settings over to our Chapter Selection menu's. So, in the menu, if it shows pictures for chapters 1 through 4, we can hit any one of those buttons and jump to the corresponding chapter. Now all of the other #'s are there too, so if you were to hit #5 on your remote, you would jump to chapter 5, even though it is not shown on the menu. You would not know this just from looking at the Chapter Selection Menu, however, and intuitively, it all makes sense.

Only Follow This Step if your Main Menu has an Intro!
a) Since we added a chapter point to our Main Menu sequence, you should see two items labeled Main Menu. Select the first one in the Play Item drop down box.
b) Set this play item to Play once.
c) Set the item to Wait for 0 Seconds.
d) Click then on timeout and select the 2nd Main Menu item. This is the chapter point we created.
e) Set the Return button to VideoCD End. Set all of the other navigational buttons (Previous, Next, Default) to Event Disabled.
f) Check Overwrite this default assignment.
g) Since this is a motion menu, we will be using the # keys to select our items so set them accordingly. You may want to play your Main Menu sequence in media player to remind yourself of which number is linked to which item.
h) Click the [...] option for the # keys.
i) Select your 2nd Main Menu item and hit OK. Now our # links are set for both of our Main Menu sequences.
j) In the Play Item drop down box, select your 2nd Main Menu item.
k) Set this item to Play forever.
l) Set the Return option (Stop) VideoCD End. Set all other options (Previous, Next, Default) to Event Disabled.
Hint: Realize what we are doing here. The Intro and Main Menu are all one track. The first time around, the intro and menu will play to the end of the track. Then it will jump to our chapter point, which is the frame that appears after the Intro. Then this part of the menu will play to the end, and again jump back to this chapter point. We have now created a loop.
Important Hint!!! When you set the Return option (stop button on remote) on the rest of your menu's make sure and tell it to return to the 2nd Main Menu item which is the part that loops. If you set it to the first item then you will have to watch the intro every time you return to the man menu.
